Run, Walk ‘n’ Roll 2017

The 22nd annual Run Walk ‘n’ Roll 2017 in aid of Cancer Research will take place on Sunday, the 15th of October at St. Joseph’s Hall, Boyle at 3 pm.

  It’s a 5.4km Family Fun Run/Walk for all ages and abilities. The theme of this year’s Run is ‘Fight back against Cancer.’

  All funds raised go towards Cancer Research and this year there will be a percentage donated to the ‘Niamh’s Journey There’ fund. Niamh is a 19-year-old local girl who was recently diagnosed with Osteosarcoma. At present Niamh is undergoing chemotherapy in Dublin and will have to make a number of trips to Birmingham for surgery.

  In excess of €160,000 has been raised for Cancer Research in Boyle through this event over the last 21 years. For more information, contact Damian Regan on 086-3942388.

Comhaltas music session

The next Roscommon Town Comhaltas branch monthly session will be held on this Sunday evening from 6 pm-8 pm in Doorly’s Corner House Pub.

  Musicians, singers and all good listeners are welcome. If you are new to the area, and a traditional performer who we have not yet met, do drop in and feel at home. These sessions are held on the second Sunday evening of every month.

Remembrance Mass

A Mass for deceased Roscommon County Council staff & members has been arranged for Friday, the 13th of October 2017 at 6 pm in the Sacred Heart Church, Roscommon. All are welcome to attend.

Western Alzheimers to start work on Respite Home in Ballindine

Western Alzheimers are set to commence reconfiguration works on Marian House Respite Home, Ballindine in the next two weeks.

  The works are required to bring the home in line with HIQA standards and involve the addition of five new ensuite bedrooms and the refurbishment of existing rooms, and are guaranteed to further enhance the experience of residents, who enjoy person-centred care based on respect, dignity and best practice standards.

  The sod-turning to mark the commencement of the works will be performed by Michael Ring, Minister for Community & Rural Development on Friday, 6th of October 2017 at 11.30 am. All are welcome. Light refreshments will be served.

Loughglynn & District Community Games AGM

The Loughglynn & District Community Games annual general meeting (AGM) will be held in Lisacul Community Centre on Thursday, the 5th of October at 9 pm. New committee members are welcome.

Meeting of Roscommon Heritage Group

The next meeting of the Roscommon Heritage Group is to take place on Tuesday, 10th of October in Gleeson’s, The Square, Roscommon, at 8.30 pm. New members always welcome.

Lecture on Rabbit Industry in Roscommon

A meeting of the Roscommon Historical & Archaeological Society will take place on Tuesday, the 10th of October at 8 pm in the Percy French Hotel, Strokestown. Following this, at 8.30 pm, a lecture, given by Michael J. Conry, right, will take place on the topic of the Rabbit Industry in Co. Roscommon and Ireland in general.

  Michael, a native of Tulsk, is a soil scientist and has worked with An Foras Taluntais (later Teagasc). He has written a number of books on agricultural matters and industrial archaeology. He is a former President of Carlow Historical Society and has been interested in the coal culm industry in Castlecomer, of which he has written a book explaining its background.

  A recent book by him on the rabbit industry explains the value of rabbit meat in Ireland especially during the war years of 1939-45 when it was a valuable addition both at home and as an export to England to supplement the meagre diet at the time in the cities.
