The next South Roscommon Singers Session will be held on Thursday, 7th of March (tonight) in Murray’s Bar, Knockcroghery, starting at 9 pm and continuing through to 11.30 pm. All are welcome, including newcomers!
County Historical Society hosts talk on General John French of WW1
A meeting of the Co. Roscommon Historical & Archaeological Society will take place on Tuesday, March 12th at 8 pm in the Percy French Hotel, Strokestown. A talk entitled ‘Roscommon: the John French Connection – The story of Britain’s top First World War General and Lord Lieutenant to Ireland and his connections with the country’ will follow with Ronan McGreevy, Irish Times journalist. John French was a descendant of the French family of Frenchpark, Co. Roscommon.
In January 1916, when French was made a Viscount, his title was ‘Viscount French of Ypres and of High Lake in the county of Roscommon’. He had family connections with High Lake.
French was commander-in-chief of the British Expeditionary Forces in WW1. Later in life, he bought a house at Drumdoe near Boyle, but, following death threats from Republicans, he was forced to leave.
Ronan McGreevy is the author of the best-selling book ‘Wherever the Firing Line Extends: Ireland and the Western Front’. All are welcome to this talk on Tuesday (admission for non-members is €5).
Roscommon Local Forum meeting
The next Roscommon Local Forum is being held on Monday, March 11th from 6-8 pm at Regari Recovery College (former Lodge Building), adjacent to the Roscommon University Hospital, Athlone Road.
A forum is a regular monthly meeting. The purpose of a local forum is to gather the views and experiences of people using mental health services, their family members and carers to bring about positive change within the mental health service. All are welcome.

10th Annual Kilmovee 10k Road Race
The 10th Annual Kilmovee 10km Road Race, in conjunction with Kilmovee GAA and Mayo/Roscommon Hospice, takes place on Saturday, April 20thcommencing in Kilmovee (near Knock Airport) at 1 pm. You can register/donate or contribute online at https://kilmovee10k.com.
