The countdown is on to the Roscommon Annual Ploughing Championships. This event – always one of the highlights of the Roscommon Agricultural Calendar – will take place on Sunday the sixth of April in Ardmullen, Kiltoom. The event’s main sponsors are the Hodson Bay Hotel Group, Kiltoom, and ‘1 Base 4 Building’, Athlone. Eamonn and Helen Leonard will host an event that is expected draw large numbers to the South Roscommon venue. Competitors will travel from around the country to compete in what is recognised as one of the leading ploughing championships in the midlands and western region. The quality of Roscommon’s senior and junior competitions continues to draw entrants from other counties. There is also great interest from inside and outside the county in this year’s farmerette category. The Single Furrow Vintage class is also very popular. A large and varied selection of trade stands and exhibitors will attend the County Ploughing match. Roscommon Ploughing Championships Committee has worked hard to secure sponsorship for the event in recent weeks. The addition this year of a reversible ploughing class has added to the appeal of the Roscommon competition and PRO Dónal Haughey reports that this class has attracted considerable interest from across the region. ‘There is a lot of interest in the reversible class this year,’ said Mr. Haughey. This year’s event will host a vintage display by the South Roscommon Vintage Association. Agri Aware will have a model farm display of live farm animals at the ploughing championships.
