New openings and strong tourism in Shannonside village

In common with many local towns and villages Lanesboro has seen a lot of development in the year of 2007 with new people arriving in the village from all over the country and abroad too.   The village is still dependent on employment in  Bord na Mona and the ESB but there are plenty of new local businesses opening too and the tourism industry is also a major contributor  to the economy of the Shannon-side village.   Local businessman and Longford County Councillor Adie Farrell says that there have been many positive developments in the village in 2007.   ‘At the moment we are finishing the cable laying for broadband and also for CCTV and we hope all that work will be completed within the next two weeks and in time for Christmas which will be a huge boost to the village’ he says.   Cllr. Farrell also says that the village will be lit up for for the Christmas Shopping season this year.    ‘Lanesboro Tourism have bought a new lighting system and we will have lighting from  the corner at the Longford Road down to the Shannon which will improve the village no end this year.    ‘Unfortunately we cannot light up the streets from the Longford Road corner up towards the church because the ESB will not allow us to put up  lights where there are wooden poles’ he said.    Cllr. Farrell says that Lanesboro is a great place to shop this Christmas . ‘Almost anything you want is here in Lanesboro. We have great shops and pubs here in the village and there is a great friendly atmosphere here  too’ he commented.    Cllr. Farrell says that there has been a major  increase in the population of the village in recent years.    ‘There has been a huge influx of people into the village. There is a new housing estate on the Ballymahon Road and there are 76 houses there and they are all occupied.’   Cllr. Farrell says that he expects furher developments  in the picturesque village of Lanesboro in 2008.    ‘We are looking forward to 2008. We hope to grow our tourism numbers further and a lot of good work is being done in  that regard. The future for Lanesboro is looking bright surely’ he concluded.
