New Endoscopy Unit opens

Harris to perform official opening

Simon Harris, the Minister for Health, will perform the official opening of the new Endoscopy Unit at Roscommon Hospital. The €6 million development became operational on Wednesday. It is opening on a phased basis: when it is fully operational, 30 procedures a day will be conducted, compared to 16 at the moment.

Nineteen staff – 12 nurses, three administrative staff and four healthcare assistants – will work in the facility.

Arrangements have not yet been made for the official opening, but Senator Frank Feighan, of Fine Gael, said: “Minister Harris has agreed to open the unit when a suitable date is agreed.” The opening of the facility has been welcomed.

“It will be great to have the endoscopy unit up and running and fully staffed,” Cllr. Valerie Byrne, of the Hospital Action Committee, said. Independent TD Michael Fitzmaurice said: “Any increase in services at Roscommon Hospital is welcome, and I will continue to fight for improved services not only at Roscommon Hospital but in the community as well.”
