New Elphin Garda Station opens

Call for resources to run it

The newly-built Elphin Garda Station recently opened – but a local councillor has called for more resources to run it. The north Roscommon town had been without a garda station since May of last year, following the closure of the previous station. The building had been leased by the Office of Public Works, but that expired last year.

This led to the closure of the station, causing much unrest in the community, with numerous public protests held.

Last December, it was announced that Elphin would get a new station, which would located on a new site, opposite the Church in the town.

This building was built several months ago and became operational on November 14. Staffed solely by Garda Pat O’Grady, it has no fixed hours.

Cllr. Valerie Byrne, an Independent, said that she was “delighted” that the station was open. “It has been a long battle,” she said.

“What we will be looking for now is an extra Garda for Elphin. I am calling for extra Gardaí to be installed and that the Garda station open full-time.”
