Speaking about the appointment Senator Leyden said that he was delighted to return to the Strasbourg-based body. ‘I am very pleased to return to the Council of Europe. It is a great honour to represent the country in this important pan-European organisation. I have always had a keen interest in European affairs and I look forward to representing Ireland’s interests and furthering co-operation between the many member states.’
