New ambulance base at Loughglynn operational

The long-awaited ambulance base at Loughglynn, near Castlerea, has finally become operational and will serve west Roscommon and east Mayo.

The opening of the facility, which was formerly a Garda station, was significantly delayed because of a row between the Health Service Executive and ambulance staff over how it would be resourced.

The dispute was resolved recently through the mediation of the Workplace Relations Commission, and the base became operational on February 1.

Local councillor Michael Creaton, of Fine Gael, welcomed the news, but said that he would like to see it open on a 24/7 basis.

He also said: “There has been a lot of effort put into securing the base, despite all the roadblocks put in the way by one senior politician.”
