N61 resurfacing works to last into late December

Motorists report delays of up to an hour

Motorists who have voiced frustration over long traffic delays on a busy road near Athlone can be prepared for the roadworks in question continuing right up to the busy Christmas period, and possibly into the New Year.

Motorists contacted the Roscommon People in recent days to voice frustration over the extent of the delays being experienced. Roscommon County Council has said it too has been fielding a number of queries.

One motorist who contacted the Roscommon People said delays of up to an hour are being experienced. She commented: “This is a massive inconvenience for workers, shoppers, people trying to attend for important appointments, etc. I appreciate the works are probably necessary, but could they not have been undertaken in the summer during the long evenings?”

Roscommon County Council says it regrets any inconvenience caused to motorists.

The resurfacing works in question are on the N61 Athlone Road between Barrymore and ‘Ganly’s roundabout’.

The works commenced in early October, with the Council saying they will be ongoing for “10-12 weeks approximately”.

That raises the likelihood of the works continuing right up to Christmas. The Council acknowledged that it has received queries from members of the public in relation to the delays.

In a statement issued last Friday, the Council said: “We’ve received a number of queries in respect of traffic flow along the N61… Roscommon County Council wishes to advise road users that delays can be expected due to ongoing roadworks being carried out on N61 between Barrymore and Athlone. Roscommon County Council regrets any inconvenience caused”.
