Murphy to Curran … NO VOTE PACT!

Cllr. Eugene Murphy will not enter into a transfer pact with Shane Curran, sources have said. One of Mr Curran’s close associates in south Roscommon has said that they want an agreement to be reached between the two Fianna Fáil candidates, whereby the Roscommon-Galway constituency would be divided between them.

They said their hope was that the Athlone/south Roscommon Local Electoral Area (LEA) would be left solely to Mr Curran, the Boyle (LEA) to Cllr. Murphy and the Roscommon LEA shared between the two. The area of East Galway in the constituency, with an electorate of around 15,000, would not be divided.

A senior member of Cllr. Murphy’s camp said that there was “not a hope” of them agreeing to such an arrangement – and in fact, a Murphy canvass was being planned for the south Roscommon area in the coming days.

The lack of a transfer pact reflects the deep split within the party locally following the decision to add Mr. Curran to the party ticket last Thursday, a move which has left Cllr. Murphy – who was selected at convention – “hurt and disappointed.”
