Fianna Fáil TD, Eugene Murphy, has called for action to tackle the scourge of illegal dumping in Counties Galway and Roscommon.
“Illegal dumping and fly tipping has developed into a serious problem. It’s shameful to see rubbish in parks, lay-bys and on roadsides. Not only is this a major eyesore, the dumping of toxic materials like tyres and building rubble also sparks potential public health concerns.
“I am concerned that not enough resources are being allocated to local authorities – manpower, surveillance and enforcement are all major issues.
“Local Authorities have environmental officers but given the vast size of the counties they have to cover it is not possible for them to keep on top of illegal dumping. We should look at providing them with more supports.
“There needs to a pro-active rather than reactive approach to illegal dumping,” he said.
