Scottish and Irish national titles are the latest addition to Roscommon athlete, Ciarán Ó Catháin’s impressive sporting CV. Ciarán won the under-20 60 metres hurdles in a time of 8.35 secs, at the Scottish Athletics Indoor Championships, held in Glasgow on 10 February. Last weekend, he garnered the equivalent title in the Woodies DIY Junior Indoor Championships at Nenagh, in a time of 8.47 secs. He also achieved a new personal best of 7.21 secs in the men’s 60 metres final, gaining a bronze medal in the process. At the beginning of the month, Ciarán was a member of the 4x200metres national team that set a new Irish record (1.31.42 mins) at the Celtic International Indoor Cup in Cardiff. The Kiltoom star, who is studying for a BSc in Sport Science and Health at DCU, has also just been named the Roscommon Athlete of the Year by Athletics Ireland. Ciaran has his sights firmly set on qualifying for the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) World Junior Championships in July.
