Local athletes Monica Finn and John Cormican excelled at the World Transplant Games, held in Bangkok during the past week. John Cormican from south Roscommon won a bronze medal in the badminton mixed doubles, playing alongside Angela Sherlock. In the semi-finals, the two faced the Swedish team and while they lost 2-1 to the Swedish outfit, they secured bronze medals. John also won a bronze medal in the long jump competition, but pulled a muscle during the competition, which ruled him out of the 200 metre event. Roscommon’s Monica Finn took silver in the petanque competition, a form of boules which originated in Provence 100 years ago. Petanque involves throwing metal balls towards a target on a fine gravel surface. The Irish doubles pairing saw Monica Finn and Bridie Nicholson from Sligo in the final against Danish opponents. They lost on a narrow 11-9 margin, but delighted in taking their places on the podium and the silver medals.
