The great strides being made at underage level in ladies football in the county was further underlined when Roscommon minors had a superb six point win against Mayo, on a scoreline of 1-15 to 0-12 in the Connacht Minor ‘A’ semi-final at Ballyleague last Friday night. They now face Galway in the final on May 6th.
With Aimee O’Connor, Ellen Irwin and Kara Earle looking dangerous up front, Roscommon were in change from the opening whistle. Kara Earle scored the only goal of the game after ten minutes and by half-time Roscommon were in control leading by 1-7 to 0-4.
Mayo did improve on the resumption but with Aisling Walshe and Emma Kildea resolute in the Roscommon defence, the Mayo scores were kept to a minimum. Aoife O’Neill was impressive from frees for Mayo but Roscommon’s lead was never really threatened. Manager Ollie Colgan and his selectors must now plan for a Connacht ‘A final.
