Connacht Ladies Football Minor ‘A’ Final
Roscommon v Galway in Swinford on Saturday at 4 pm
There have been great strides made to develop ladies football in the county over the past year in particular and while the club game is the most important part of that development, a win at elite county level would be a huge boost to the game in the county and that’s what is possible as Roscommon face Galway in this Connacht final on Saturday in Swinford.
Having beaten Mayo with a fine display in the semi-final, it would be a huge coup to take out Galway as well. The Ollie Colgan managed team also put up a big score against Sligo, winning by 17 points. However, when they scored 4-12 (to 2-8) in the semi-final against Mayo there was a realisation that a breakthrough is entirely possible this weekend.
The management team also includes Shane Curran, Jenny Higgins, Laura Fleming, Brendan Cregg and Sarah McVeigh. The Roscommon team will be hoping that top scorers Aoife Gavin and Aimee O’Connor are on fire again. The team captain is Shauna Fleming and Kelley Colgan and Fleming will be the leaders in defence. Up front Lauren Curran, Sinead Glennon and Mikeala McHugh will also feature in what is a strong panel.
Galway will come with a big reputation and will probably start as the slight favourites. However, there was never much between the teams when they met at U-14 and U-16 level. This is a well-coached Roscommon team who will be ready for the big day. It would be a momentous victory, and it is entirely possible.
