Connacht Minor League Galway ……………………. 0-11 Roscommon ………………. 0-7 Roscommon finished their Connacht minor league campaign on a losing note when they went down by four points to Galway in a game that was played in poor weather conditions in Dr. Hyde Park on Saturday evening last. The strong winds, rain and hail showers ensured that the standard of football never rose too high and that was understandable in the circumstances. Galway played with the weather at the backs in the first half. Galway led by 0-4 to 0-1 after 18 minutes, Bernard Carthy scoring Roscommon’s only point on the quarter-hour mark. However Gary Wynne’s team were playing well against the elements, and points from Eamonn Kenny and Brian Murtagh narrowed the gap to just one point close to half-time. However Galway’s lead was 0-5 to 0-3 at half-time after JJ Greaney scored a ’45. The wind did not seem as strong in the second half and Galway took full advantage and they were first to score from the placed ball. Then Roscommon scored two points in a row from Eoin Sheehy and Brian Murtagh but that was as good as it got for the home side and Galway stretched away again. Roscommon had to make do with further points from Bernard Carthy and Eamonn Bannon (a ’45). Galway had won by four points and their captain JJ Greaney was presented with the Connacht minor league trophy after the game. Roscommon now play in the Connacht minor championship in two weeks time against Leitrim.
