Electric Ireland Connacht MFC (Round Four):
Roscommon v Sligo on Friday at 7 pm at Dr. Hyde Park
Roscommon’s chances of progress in this year’s Connacht Minor Football Championship will depend on whether they can defeat Sligo in their final group game at Dr. Hyde Park on Friday evening. If Roscommon are to win and advance to a semi-final meeting with Galway it will take a massive improvement from James Duignan’s side, who have been very disappointing in the championship to date.
Roscommon suffered a heavy defeat to Galway in round one before going down to 14-man Mayo in round two and drawing with Leitrim in their last match.
Sligo defeated Leitrim by nine points last Friday night (4-18 to 2-15) so the Yeats County have an attack that is capable of putting up a big score. That will be a worry to the Roscommon management and players as Leitrim carved open the Roscommon defence almost at will in their last game. Just as well for Roscommon that Leitrim were wasteful on the night but if Roscommon give away as many chances this Friday they might not be so fortunate.
Playing at Dr. Hyde Park will be an advantage to Roscommon but with that big win against Leitrim giving them momentum going into the game, it would be a surprise if Sligo don’t emerge victorious against what is admittedly a very young Roscommon team.
