Minister quizzed on Portiuncula capacity

Independent TD Denis Naughten has quizzed Minister for Health, Stephen Donnelly, on the capacity of Portiuncula Hospital to deal with a surge in patients as a result of Covid-19.

He said that delays in funding and refurbishment works have prevented the completion of two proposed modular buildings to increase capacity.

“At present Portiuncula hospital, which is one of the biggest acute hospitals servicing the midlands while trying to manage an infectious disease, has only thirteen single rooms.

“While funding has been forthcoming for the modular building for the outpatient department, no refurbishment work has yet taken place of the old outpatient department and no funding has been provided for the second modular building for the accident and emergency department,” Deputy Naughten said.

Deputy Naughten put forward two questions regarding the provision of funding to refurbish the old outpatient department and a modular building to deal with the current situation in the emergency department.

He then urged the Minister of Health Stephen Donnelly to sanction the funding in order to deal with the current situation.
