Mental Health Ireland, the national voluntary organisation which aims to promote positive mental health and to actively support persons with a mental illness, their families and carers by identifying their needs and advocating their rights is launching a Mental Health Association in Ballaghaderreen. As Development Officer for Mental Health Ireland Myra Beirne-Walshe is inviting local communities in Ballaghaderreen and the surrounding areas to join with her in this proactive initiative. Myra says: ‘Mental Health Ireland believes that local communities are a very important forum in promoting mental health and are best placed to determine their needs and priorities on Mental Health issues. ‘The setting up of the association in Ballaghaderreen is coming at a very important time with growing awareness of the need to address mental health issues in the community. ‘With this in mind the local MHA can get involved in activities that may include seminars and public information days on mental health issues and may also seek to address areas of concern relating to mental health with appropriate authorities in the county, thereby influencing and ensuring the implementation of the government new policy document a ‘Vision for Change”. The launch will take place on Thursday 7 th June 2007 in the Upstairs Function Room of Durkin’s Restaurant, Ballaghaderreen at 8 p.m. Mr. Brian Howard, CEO of Mental Health Ireland will address the meeting. Also, the findings of a recent survey carried out in Ballaghaderreen will be presented. All members of local associations work on a voluntary basis to promote positive mental health.
