Memorable day for Gary at Spar Kids Sport Day

Eleven-year-old Gary Kelly had a very memorable day recently in the company of sporting heroes Seán Óg Ó hAilpín and Derval O’Rourke when he took part in the Spar Kids Sports Day. Gary was the Roscommon winner at the Spar Kids Sports Day, which encourages children to try out different sports and discover ones they enjoy the best. Gary enjoyed training sessions with Seán Óg and Derval where he learned hurling and hurling skills before participating in the SPAR Kids Sports Day Challenges. The children competed for a variety of sporting titles from ‘Best Team Player’ to ‘Best Overall Sportsperson.’ With less than half of Irish children taking part in regular physical activity, childhood obesity continues to rise — one in four Irish children are categorised as overweight or obese. Children should be involved in at least 60 minutes of moderate physical activity each day to ensure a balanced and healthy lifestyle. Derval O’Rourke said: ‘I was delighted when SPAR started supporting me at a vital stage in my athletics career. It’s great to be part of their programme to get kids active and healthy, something I’m very passionate about. SPAR Kids is all about getting out and having some fun… And who knows, maybe some of the kids here today will discover a passion for athletics!’ Seán Óg O’hAlpín said: ‘These days it’s so important for kids to get involved in some sort of activity. Sport has always been a great outlet for me and I was delighted to become part of the SPAR Kids programme which is all about encouraging kids to get healthy and fit without worrying about how good they are or how many medals they can win.’
