Fine Gael will formally choose three first-time candidates for next year’s local elections in Roscommon when two of the party’s three selection conventions take place over the coming days.

Robbie McConn (Athleague) and Gareth Scahill (Castlerea) have been nominated to run for Fine Gael in the Roscommon Municipal District, while another first-time candidate, Dympna Daly-Finn (Arigna) has been nominated to run alongside sitting councillor Liam Callaghan in the Boyle area.

The Roscommon Municipal District Fine Gael Convention will be held in Kilbride Community Centre this evening, Thursday, 23rd of November (7.30 pm).

Constituency Organiser Pat Tully has confirmed to the Roscommon People that Robbie McConn and Gareth Scahill are the only two candidates nominated (as such, they will be selected unopposed). Gerry Coffey, the party’s sole candidate in Roscommon Municipal District in the last local elections (2019) announced last month that he will not be seeking a nomination on this occasion.

Mr. McConn, from Athleague, is a well-known community figure who is prominent in sporting circles. Active in the GAA at club and county level, he is a member of Roscommon GAA County Board. Also a director of Roscommon Racecourse, he was recently elected vice-captain of Roscommon Golf Club for 2024.

Mr Scahill, a Castlerea-based businessman, has been a prominent and active member of Castlerea Town Team, and is widely involved in community life in the town.

The Fine Gael Selection Convention for Boyle Municipal District will be held on Monday next, 27th of November, in An Bóthar Rua, Elphin (8.30 pm). Two candidates have been nominated, namely sitting councillor Liam Callaghan, and newcomer Dympna Daly-Finn, from Arigna. As nominations have now closed, both candidates will be selected unopposed.

Mr Tully said that no date has yet been set for the Athlone Convention, where John Naughten is a sitting Fine Gael councillor.
