Mart sale moves closer as retail war heats up

The multi-million euro sale of Roscommon Mart appears to have moved closer to becoming a reality this week. Speculation that Roscommon Mart’s presence in its long-established location at Circular Road, Roscommon may come to an end in the relatively near future has intensified – and all in a week which sees a new chapter open in the ‘superstore’ story in Roscommon town.    This morning (Thursday), another retail giant, ALDI, officially opens its doors at the Centrepoint facility at Circular Road. ALDI is located next to LIDL, and both of the German superstores are within a few hundred metres’ of Tesco and Dunnes.    It has been apparent for some time that Roscommon Mart occupies what is considered very lucrative and much-desired space in what is now the commercial centre of the county town. Over recent years there has been much speculation that the Mart will bow to temptation, ‘sell up’ and re-locate to lands outside Roscommon town.    This week Roscommon Mart has placed an advertisement in the Roscommon People ‘inviting expressions of interest for Design Services for the re-location of Roscommon Livestock Mart to their lands at Emoe, Roscommon.’    The advertisement states that the closing date for such expressions of interest is 21 st of December, 2007 and adds that all enquiries should be sent to The Secretary.
