Castlerea Mart Report
September 29th: Castlerea Mart held its annual Continental Heifer Show and Sale and Belgian Blue Weanlings Show and Sale on Thursday last with a large entry of top quality stock on offer.
Prices for the heifers were similar to previous weeks with good demand and trade reflective of the current beef prices.
In the weanling classes some very fancy prices were recorded for the top quality lots with bulls making up to €4.10 a kilo and heifers up to €3.97 a kilo with a good clearance taking place.
Sample prices – heifers: BBx 390kgs €1200, Lm 420kgs €1150, Ch 470kgs €1250, Lm 480kgs €1175, Ch 545kgs €1445, Lm 700kgs €1570.
Dry cows: BB 705kgs €1500, Lm 750kgs €1305, Lm 910kgs €1520, Ch 840kgs €1425. Cows with calves at foot made from €950 to €1600 per head. Springer cows made from €840 to €1410 per head.
Calves: Smaller number of young calves on offer with runners making from €250 to €655 per head.
Weanling bulls: BBX 280kgs €965, Ch 280kgs €885, BBx 365kgs €1500, BBx 390kgs €1240, Ch 475kgs €1180, BBx 335kgs €1175. Weanling heifers: BBx 290kgs €1100, Ch 270kgs €985, BBx 335kgs €1330, BB 300kgs €1050, Ch 280kgs €850.
Bullock Sale – Monday, September 26th: 300 bullocks on offer with better quality presented at the Annual Show and Sale of Continental Bullocks with bullocks making from €300 to €935 over their weight with an average of €600 over paid. Prices were similar to previous weeks with quality lots commanding the best prices with plainer type stock remaining harder sold.

Cattle prices – Friday, September 30th: Brisk trade for heifers, with lots making from €2.32 per kilo up to €3.53 per kilo or €1200 with the weight. Easier trade for lesser quality Bullocks with prices ranging from €1.97 per kilo up to €2.50 per kilo. Large entry of dry cows with prices averaging from €1.54 per kilo up to €1.96 per kilo. Special sale of Bullocks tomorrow (7th) at 11 am. Harvest special sale of heifers: Friday October 14th at 11 am.

Breeding ewes – Saturday, October 1st: The trade for both breeding and hoggets was slightly back on the previous week however there was good clearance of lots. Prices for 2 years made up to €150 while the top in hoggets was €180. The final sale of the season will be held this Saturday (8th) at 11 am, also final sale of pedigree rams at 1 pm. Hoggets ranged from €120 to €180 per head, 2-year-old ewes made from €115 to €150 per head, 3-year-old ewes made from €108 to €120 per head.
Weanlings show and sale – Tuesday, October 4th: Improvedtrade for both bulls and heifer weanlings. Prices for heifer weanlings averaged from €2.58 per kilo up to €3.64 per kilo while the trade for weanling bulls ranged from €2.56 per kilo up to €3.60 per kilo. A special entry of Simm X cows fetched from €1400 up to €1750. Special sale of weanlings next Tuesday, October 11th at 5 pm. Bookings accepted up to today (Thursday 6th).

Sheep sale – Wednesday, October 5th: Excellent quality ewe lambs on offer with a top price of €115. There was a slight dip in trade for finished lambs making €106.
