Marianna wins without playing!

It was a disappointing weekend for Roscommon girls handballers. Marianna Rushe is the All-Ireland minor singles champion – however she did not have to play a final as her opponent, Niamh Murphy, did not turn up on the day, meaning that the title was awarded to the Roscommon girl.   At Ballina on Sunday Hilary Rushe lost the Junior singles final to the highly-rated Lisa Falvey of Kerry 21-17, 21-7.    In the Intermediate Doubles final Ashley  Prenderville and Sharon Daly of Kerry beat Roscommon’s Deirdre Donohue and Katie Costello 21-16, 21-13 in a very hard-fought final.   Intervarsities competition: There is plenty of Roscommon interest in the annual Intervarsities competition this weekend. Taking part in the various competitions will be Chris Doolin, Rikki O’Gara, Nigel Gordon, Katie Costello, Emer Coyle, Marianna Rushe, Dara O’Gara and Thomas McGrath.   There are two St. Comans players, Oisin Naughton and Nigel Neilan, playing in the USHA championships this weekend. They play an American pairing on Saturday.   USHA Junior and U-17 trials at Williamstown: Leona Doolin of St. Comans was in top form at Williamstown in the USHA Junior trials. She beat Avril McGonigle of Donegal and Mary Duffy of Donegal. There are further games coming up in the next few weeks.
