Marianna and Catriona take honours

A splendid week for Roscommon handball with Marianna Rushe and her NUIG team mate Catriona Casey of Kerry winning the ladies open doubles at the Collegiates in Missouri and Marianna also reached the singles final going down narrowly to Emer Fallon of  UCD. In junior doubles Niall McGrath and Neil McDermott had a good win over Kevin Craddock and Trevor Hannon of Galway in the Connacht championship. There was an outstanding display by Liam Grehan/Seamus McHugh in Emerald ‘A’ Doubles as they easily beat Matt Coady/Seamus Clarke of Mayo at Claremorris. In the All Ireland Colleges (girls) semi finals and finals at Kingscourt the results for Connacht were good as they won three of the four titles. Leona Doolin/Hilary Rushe of Convent of Mercy, Roscommon retained the senior doubles title making it an amazing eight in a row of senior doubles titles won by the Roscommon Convent. The junior singles title went to Clodagh McManamon of Sacred Heart, Westport and the junior doubles to Stephanie Coleman and Pamela Conry of St. Nathys. In the senior singles semi final Linda Connolly of Mercy Convent, Roscommon lost to Shauna Hilley of Wicklow.  Collegiates in Missouri: While the full results are not to hand it is evident that Roscommon handballers did pretty well.  Connacht junior championship: Niall McGrath/Neil McDermott of Roscommon didn’t give Kevin Craddock/Trevor Hannon of Galway any opportunity to get into their stride. Winning 21-14, 21-17. They now meet Aengus Cunningham/Chistopher Doolin of Comans on 8 th March at the St. Coman’s handball club. Emerald ‘A’ doubles: A top-notch performance by Seamus McHugh/Liam Grehan of St. Brigid’s as they overran the strong Mayo pair of Matt Coady/Seamus Clarke at Claremorris winning 21-6, 21-8.  Ruby Masters Doubles: The expected win by Sean Heaney/Michael Reilly of Mayo over Mick Naughton/Tommy Hynes nearly came unstuck and they had to hang on grimly to win 21-14, 15-21, 21-18.  Colleges (boys): In the Connacht final at Williamstown Cian Connelly/Mark Nally (CBS Roscommon) beat Rice College Adam Nevin/Alan Ryder but lost the All Ireland semi final at Clogh to Keith and Mason Clifford of Kilkenny. Colleges (Girls): Connacht Colleges came home with three of the four titles on offer. Pride of place goes to the Roscommon Convent of Mercy Senior doubles team of Leona Doolin/Hilary Rushe beating Aishling Fitzgerald of Scariff C.S. and partner Edel O’Grady 21-1, 21-3.  Colleges Championship (Girls): At the Girls Colleges final at Kingscourt Linda Connolly of Convent of Mercy Roscommon lost in the Senior singles semi-final to Shauna Hilley of Wicklow and there was a thrilling win for Stephanie Coleman/Pamela Conry in Junior doubles beating St. Patrick’s College, Armagh in the final and Clodagh McManamon of Sacred Heart Westport, won the Junior singles. Connacht Girls team of ten (U-13 to U-17): The Inter pro girls team of ten championship (40 X 20) takes place at the weekend at a venue to be decided. Connacht play Munster and Leinster play Ulster with the winners meeting immediately afterwards. Connacht Fixtures: Saturday 1 st March the following fixtures start at 5 pm: Junior ‘B’ doubles John Kennedy/Steve Joyce (Ballymoe/Ballincurry) Vs. Share Heraty/Ronan O’Malley (Mayo) at Kiltimagh. Junior Singles: Tom Sweeney (M) Vs. Denis Creaton (Lisacul) in the Connacht semi-final at Williamstown and the second semi-final in Junior is between Christopher Doolin (R) and Paul Flynn (M). In Masters ‘B’ doubles John J. Carroll (Fairymount) and Paddy McDermott (Ballintubber) play A Bell and M. Hopkins (Mayo) at Claremorris.  Connacht Junior ‘B’ doubles at Glinsk: Oisin Naughton/Nigel Neilan (St. Comans) will play Andrew Hussey/Seamus Connelly of Williamstown at 8p.m. in Glinsk on Wednesday 5 th March.
