Major oil spillage promptly dealt with

It took firemen from Roscommon and Lanesboro fire stations nearly nine hours to clean nearly two miles of road on the outskirts of Roscommon town after a major oil spillage last Monday evening.   An oil delivery tanker travelling from Casey’s service station on the Athlone Road to Corrib Oil on the Racecourse Road lost large reserves of oil shortly after 8.00 pm. Firemen attached to Roscommon fire station were called into action at 8.30 pm and were forced to seek assistance from their colleagues of Lanesboro Fire station.    The cleaning operation took more than eight hours and the firemen worked through the night till 4.30 am. Roscommon Gardaí worked with the fire service throughout the eight and a half hour period. The road was washed with oil dispersant and was fully operational on Tuesday morning.
