Locals join in commemorating 1916 Rising Centenary

A large number of people from Co. Roscommon travelled to Dublin last weekend to attend the historic Easter Sunday Commemoration Ceremony and Parade as the Irish state formally marked the Centenary of the 1916 Rising. More than 260,000 people lined the streets of the Capital.

A number of people from Co. Roscommon attended the proceedings, along with many from the Galway village of Ballymoe, where Eamonn Ceannt, one of the Proclamation’s signatories, was from.

In Co. Roscommon, commemorations were held in Ballaghaderreen, Arigna, Ballinlough and Ballyleague over the weekend.

More than 200 people attended the 2016 Easter Commemoration at the grave of William Partridge in Ballaghaderreen on Saturday afternoon.

Deputy Martin Kenny, the newly-elected Sligo-Leitrim TD, gave the oration. Castlerea-based Seamus O’Brien read the ‘Roscommon Roll of Honour’, comprising the names of those from the county involved in the Rising.

Ballaghaderreen’s Claire Kerrane read the Proclamation.
