Castlecoote was announced as Roscommon’s tidiest location in this year’s SuperValu Tidy Towns awards which were announced on Monday. The village finished on 337 marks, just two short of this year’s overall winner Listowel in Co. Kerry and just one ahead of second-placed Roscommon entry, Keadue.
Meanwhile, there was cause for celebration in Ballintubber when it was announced that the committee there had clinched a SuperValu Diversity Award worth €2,000 for its efforts in involving the entire community in its projects. Ballintubber also received another commendation, with 327 marks in the overall adjudication.
Roscommon town won its second gold medal in a row after claiming 326 marks in this year’s competition while Portrun won a special Endeavour award worth €500 for its status as the most improved location in the county. The area was runner-up in the ‘waters and communities’ category for the entire North-West and West region. Tarmonbarry and Cloontuskert both won bronze medals.
Kilteevan and Athleague also claimed runners-up spots in the Community Walkway Sustainable Development category while Margaret Nugent of Rooskey Tidy Towns was honoured for her work as secretary of the committee with a SuperValu Community Hero award.
