Local politicians express shock

Politicians in Roscommon/Galway have been expressing their shock and sympathy following the fatal shooting of Detective Garda Colm Horkan in Castlerea.

Sinn Féin TD Claire Kerrane said that the killing is a truly shocking incident.

“This is a truly terrible incident and has caused major shock amongst the entire community in Castlerea and the wider region”.

She said her thoughts are with the Garda’s family and colleagues at this very difficult time.

Sligo-Leitrim Fine Gael TD Frank Feighan said it is a sharp reminder to the heart of the nation of the danger that people who serve this nation put themselves in every single hour of every day. Deputy Feighan said that what had happened is a brutal and sad tragedy.

Fianna Fáil Senator Eugene Murphy said that Detective Garda Horkan served with distinction and pride during his 24 years. He said the job of An Garda Síochána is very challenging and Detective Garda Horkan was protecting his community but sadly he paid the ultimate price with his life while in the line of duty.

They all extended their sympathy to Detective Horkan’s family, friends and work colleagues.
