Local man’s 93-mile kayaking trip in aid of cancer research

Patrick ‘Junior’ Hannon called into Roscommon People offices earlier this week and spoke about his upcoming kayaking trip to Limerick in aid of Cancer Research (on Friday, May 27th).

“I just thought it would be something nice to do, I get to fulfill a dream and get to raise money for a worthy cause,” he said.

Junior’s trip will take him 93 miles down river from the Lanesboro/Ballyleague direction – and while there will be a support team to assist, this is very much man against the elements.

It has been a long journey so far for Junior and it all started with a little help.

“I was out in Portrun a good few years ago. I had a fibreglass canoe and I was trying to get into it. I was upside down in it, I was every other way!”

  Fortunately, help was at hand.

“There was a lad out kayaking and he started chatting to me. The next thing I knew I was off doing it and then doing a course in kayaking!” he reflects.

Kayaking became an outlet for Junior and a love affair with the water had begun.

“I found it a great way to relieve frustration and it’s a nice way to wind down. It changed my life in a lot of ways; I really got very fond of it. I went off and I became an instructor and I do a bit with the Sports Partnership and RAD youth project. You can go off out there with the world on your shoulders and come back after two or three hours and if the house is on fire, sure throw turf on it!”

Junior and his team have been training since January for this attempt and while he has completed the Liffey Descent – along with his wife Elaine – this will be a different challenge.

The team, which is sponsored by the Canoe Centre in Dublin, and includes Niall Madden, Chris McDaid, Roy Glennon, Fergal Brasil and Seamus Irwin, will depart from the bridge in Lanesboro at 10.30 am on Friday, May 27th and after completing 30 miles per day will arrive in Limerick by Monday, May 31st.
