Local handballers off to Basque Country with Irish team

It was another very good weekend for Roscommon handball. At  Ballina in Tipperary the Connacht girls 60 X 30 team of ten (ages 13 to 17) staged a great comeback to beat Munster in the interprovincial final.   In the semi-final Connacht beat Leinster by 123 points to 86 after a slow start.    Results (Connacht team first) – U-13: Ciana ni Churrachan/Sarah Coleman 16pts, Leinster 28. U-14: Lauren O’Riordan/Catherine Hanlon 30 pts, Leinster 11. U-15: Amy Corrigan/ Roisin Ni Congaile 30 pts Leinster 7pts. U-16:  Stephanie Coleman/Mary Duffy 17pts Leinster 30 pts. U-17: Leona Doolin/Hilary Rushe 30 pts Leinster 10 pts.   In the final Connacht lost the U-13 by 14 points and the U-14 by 3 points. Then in the U-15 Connacht lost by 18 points. It was all down to the U-16s and U-17s and remarkably they did the trick for Connacht with brilliant wins.   The U-16s won by 28 points and the U-17s won by 24 points to give Connacht a 17 point win.    Scores – U-13: Connacht 15 points Leinster 29 points. U-14: Connacht 23 points Munster 26 points. U-15: Connacht 12 points Munster 30 points. U-16: Connacht 30 pts Munster 2 points. U-7: Connacht 30 points Munster 6 points. Final score: Connacht 110 Munster 93.   Lauran O’Riordan, Stephanie Coleman, Mary Duffy, Leona Doolin and Hilary Rushe were all outstanding for Connacht. The team manager was Michael Naughton (St. Comans) with assistant managers Francis ni Churrain (Galway) and Dermot Doolin (St. Comans).    Congrats to the Connacht team and thanks to everyone who provided transport and thanks  to Paddy Collins at the Ballina club for his kindness on the day.   In the semi-final of the Roscommon inter-club Junior B Championship Roscommon champions Curraghboy (Billy Kelly, Paul Kelly Philip O’Connor and Padraig Coyle) beat Salthill by 84 points to 43 and they now face Claremorris in the provincial final.   There was no luck for Lisacul (Paul Deane, Martin Bruen, Sean Jennings and Denis Creaton) and the provincial semi-final in the Junior inter club competition. They were beaten by Salthill.   Memberships and registration can be lodged  at St. Comans this Friday, 30th November from 8 pm to 10 pm. Only fully paid-up members will be allowed to take part in competitions or championships.    All intending members please come along on Friday night.    In the Intervarsity 40 x 20 championships at Galway it was another good weekend for the local side, NUIG. Roscommon players Rikki O’ Gara, John Kennedy and Marianna Rushe were the backbone of the Connacht team. Marianna Rushe has now won three inter-varsity titles.   The Irish team departs for the Basque Country this Thursday to take part in the one-wall championships. Leona Doolin, Katie Costello and Marianna Rushe from the St.  Comans Club are on the team. There are teams from France, England, Italy and the USA  taking part, along with the home country. The team will return on 5th December.   The St. Comans AGM will take place on Friday, Dec. 7th at 8 pm.
