A Garda from Castlerea who is working in Tullamore was taken to hospital last weekend after he was hit by a stolen truck in a dramatic incident in the Co. Offaly town. 27-year-old David Scahill who is a well-known member of the Castlerea St. Kevins senior football team was on duty on Friday night/Saturday morning in Tullamore when Gardai were requested to set up a checkpoint following a break-in in the town earlier in the night. At 4.30 am a stolen Iveco truck approached the checkpoint but did not stop and Garda Scahill was carried on the bonnet of the truck for almost half a mile before he fell to the ground, sustaining minor injuries. The truck continued for another short distance before crashing into a wall. Garda sources said afterwards that Garda Scahill was extremely lucky that he was not seriously or indeed fatally injured. Garda Scahill was taken to Tullamore General Hospital where he was treated for his injuries but he was released later and he is now on leave.
