Local Fianna Fáil TD and Minister of State, Mr. Michael Finneran TD, said that the Lisbon Reform Treaty is essential to guarantee full equality for Ireland and small countries on the Commission. Minister Finneran said, ‘Many people don’t realise that European law currently requires the reduction of the Commission’s size but give no guarantee that countries will be treated equally. ‘When we were negotiating the Treaty, we insisted that the principle of equality between countries would be introduced and we succeeded in achieving this. As a result, Ireland with four million people will have the same rights as Germany with 80 million people. ‘Of course one of the keys to Ireland’s influence in Europe is not that we have a single Commissioner, but that we are seen as one of the most positive and active members. There are currently three Irish people heading the offices of Commission members and the Commission’s most senior official is Irish,’ concluded Minister Finneran.
