Lidl will open in Lanesboro Road, Roscommon, on Thursday the 29 th March – reflecting the great growth of Lidl across Europe. This week the company said it will bring low cost, high quality food and non-food products to the people of Co. Roscommon. Managed by Kathleen Larkin the store will employ circa 25 staff initially. The German retailer operates discount stores in 21 European countries (Germany, France, Holland, Belgium, Luxembourg, Greece, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Austria, Poland, Czech Republic, Hungary, Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Slovakia, Croatia, the UK and Ireland). The unique combination of top quality, low priced food has been a success all around Europe. Lidl’s claim is to have a simple philosophy: offering customers everyday quality products at the lowest possible price. To ensure low prices, Lidl saves money where it can — using its massive buying power, it passes on savings directly to its customers, who can expect huge savings compared to other major supermarkets. Another key to Lidl’s low prices is its low operational costs. Lidl stores are designed to allow a very efficient operation. Kathleen Larkin, Store Manager, speaking at the announcement of this development said she ‘was delighted to be part of Lidl’s continued expansion in Ireland. Apart from the everyday items you would expect like bread and milk, cereals and frozen food, we will carry a range of premium products — from select teas and coffees to ice cream and chilled meats. Household names like Weetabix, Heinz baby food and kit kat chocolate bars are also to be found. Our fruit and vegetables will also be delivered to us fresh daily so customers can be assured of excellent quality.’ The company has long-term plans for its operation in Ireland. Lidl already employ c.2000 staff in Ireland. With the company planning more stores openings in the immediate future — stores in other locations are already under construction – the number of employees is set to increase in a very short time. Lidl are already working with local suppliers.
