Outgoing Fianna Fail Senator Terry Leyden will be the only Roscommon representative in Seanad Eireann in the new term of the Upper House after the election count which was held in Dublin earlier this week. Senator Leyden was returned to the House on Wednesday on the Labour Panel – with an increased vote. The Castlecoote man received 57 first preference votes and took the 4th of the 11 seats on that panel. However there was bad news for Cllrs. Eugene Murphy (Fianna Fail) and Domnick Connolly (Fine Gael) after they both failed to be elected on the Agricultural panel. Cllr. Murphy received 18 first preference votes and Cllr. Connolly received 15 first preferences, which was not enough to keep them in the race, leading to the elimination of both. Earlier in the week outgoing Leitrim Fianna Fail Senator Paschal Mooney lost his Seanad seat and with Senator Mary Bohan narrowly losing out it means that Co. Leitrim now has no representative in either the Dail or Seanad.
