Leyden loses out in Cathaoirleach bid

Roscommon Fianna Fail Senator Terry Leyden has failed in his bid to become the new Cathaoirleach of the Seanad. At a meeting of the Fianna Fail group held in Leinster House yesterday (Wednesday) and attended by An Taoiseach Bertie Ahern Senator Leyden and two other candidates (Jim King and Anne Ormonde) were defeated by Co. Offaly Senator Pat Moylan who will become Cathaoirleach when the new Seanad meets today (Thursday).   The vote was Moylan 15, Walsh 5, Ormonde 5, Leyden 4, giving Moylan outright victory on the first count.    Senator Leyden was in a philosophical mood when he spoke to the People on Wednesday. ‘I’m not sorry I ran and I did well considering that I am only five years a Senator. I want to congratulate Senator Moylan. He was a very strong candidate and he will make an excellent cathaoirleach’ he said.    ‘I will now be looking for a spokesmanship and that will be decided by An Taoiseach Bertie Ahern in the next few days. I was spokesman for Enterprise and Employment in the last Seanad but it remains to be seen what will happen.’
