Legendary commentator Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh dies aged 93

Legendary gaelic games commentator Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh has died at the age of 93.

Mr Ó Muircheartaigh was born in 1930 just outside Dingle, Co Kerry.

Originally a teacher, his first job with RTÉ came in 1949 when he provided an all-Irish commentary on the Railway Cup Final on St Patrick’s Day. He became a full-time broadcaster with RTÉ in the mid-80’s and retired in October of 2010.

He died this morning in the Mater Hospital, Dublin surrounded by his family.
