Ballaghaderreen student Laurence Cole has won a much-coveted place in the National Irish Youth Theatre. Seventeen-year-old Laurence, who is a Leaving Cert student at St Nathy’s College, Ballaghaderreen, competed against drama students from all over the country to win a place in the National Youth Theatre summer production. During July and August, Laurence will take part in drama workshops and theatrical training at Maynooth University. This will then culminate in a performance of Brecht’s ‘The Caucasian Chalk Circle’ in The Peacock Theatre at the Abbey in Dublin, from August 27th until September 1st. No stranger to acting, Laurence has been performing in school plays since the age of five and last year, he was one of a group of drama students chosen to represent Ireland in an international performance arts project for Dublin Fringe Festival. More recently, Laurence has appeared in Roscommon County Youth Theatre’s production of Arthur Miller’s ‘The Crucible’, which gets another airing in July during the Boyle Arts Festival.
