Big events this Friday and Saturday!
The launches of Strokestown and Elphin branch offices, which recently amalgamated with Roscommon Credit Union, will take place later this week, and excitement is building ahead of the two events. On January 15th, Elphin Credit Union, which had a branch in Strokestown, transferred its business to Roscommon Credit Union and both offices in Elphin and Strokestown became branch networks of the Roscommon office.
The launch of the Strokestown office will take place on Friday, July 1st, at 10 am. Eugene Murphy, the Fianna Fáil TD, will be the Guest of Honour, and all members, old and new, are welcome to attend.
A fine hamper, compiled by Maureen in Hanly’s Spar in Strokestown, will be up for winning by all members who visit on the day.
The launch of Elphin office will be held on Saturday, July 2nd, when Deputy Murphy will again be in attendance.
Shannonside FM’s outside broadcast unit will be outside the branch and a voucher from Ronan at Morris Meats in Elphin will be raffled on the day for all members who visit.
A car draw and cash prizes will take place also on Saturday morning. Thousands of euro will be given away in prizes.
Bernie Moran, the Manager of Roscommon Credit Union, said that the merger with Elphin was a positive move for the credit union.
“We shared a natural geographical and cultural compatibility with Elphin Credit Union and our common bond areas actually met at Clashaganny and Mount Pleasant,” she said.
“In November 2015, the possibility of a transfer of engagements became possible for Elphin Credit Union to transfer their business to Roscommon Credit Union. All members were circulated and advised of this in December.”
Roscommon Credit Union has now three offices open six days a week.
The Roscommon office is open from 10 am to 5 pm from Mondays to Thursdays and from 10 am to 8 pm on Fridays.
The Elphin branch is now open on Mondays from 10 am to 4.30 pm (it closes for lunch from 1.30 pm to 2.30 pm), and on Saturdays from 11 am to 1 pm.
The Strokestown branch is open from 10 am to 4.30 pm on Fridays, again closing for lunch from 1.30 pm to 2.30 pm.
Services include savings, loans, foreign exchange (commission-free), loan protection and life savings insurance, free make-a-will service, electronic payments to and from your credit union account, discounted health insurance, car insurance and travel insurances.
Roscommon Credit Union has lent almost €2.9 million since the beginning of the financial year to members in their common bond.
Their three offices have been newly painted and cleaned to reflect the same interior and exterior colours, so not only are the staff ready to serve you with the same services in each office, but your surroundings will be familiar too.
Since the merger, Roscommon Credit Union has thrived, growing its members by 21 per cent. There has also been a 16.6 per cent growth in the number of loans issued and 21 per cent growth in the value of loans issued. There has also been a 12 per cent growth in their overall loan book.
“These results are very positive key statistics and shows the real value in our credit unions merging,” Ms. Moran said.

Chairperson ‘s view
John Devaney, the chairperson of Roscommon Credit Union, said: “We urge our members to use their credit union as their provider of choice for competitive loans and reap the benefits that are associated with being a credit union member.
“Every member has a vote and an opportunity to say how their credit union is operated, unlike other financial institutions.”
The staff numbers have also risen because of the increased footfall in the branches, with 11 staff, an 11-person voluntary board, three-person oversight committee and Elphin local committee all working united together for the benefit of members.
