In September 2016, a meeting took place in Vita House, Abbey Street, Roscommon, between a representative of The Irish Cancer Society, members of staff at Roscommon Cancer Support Service, and a small number of volunteers. It was decided to investigate the idea of offering a Pet Care Service to those cancer patients who find themselves incapacitated due to acute illness or treatment.
Since research proved inconclusive as to the extent of the need for this service, the group decided to run a six-month pilot of the project, which was officially launched at Vita House last week by Gerry Browne. A beautiful new logo was designed by Jessica Fahy, Ballaghaderreen.
The group said this week: “Many thanks to Jessica for her interest and talent, and to her mum, Sarah, for all her help and encouragement.”
Roscommon Cancer Support at Vita House understands that a very special connection can develop between owners and their pets. This companionship can provide emotional security and give the basis for a fixed daily routine. This can help reduce anxiety in times of stress due to serious illness. Pets are warm and intensely loyal, providing emotional security, and our vision is to help maintain this essential companionship, by helping to care for pets while their owners are working through a difficult time.
This pet care service will be open to cancer patients who are temporarily unable to adequately care for their domestic pets, due to acute illness or treatment.
The service will see trained and Garda vetted volunteers going to the homes of clients to assist with feeding, cleaning and exercising the animals. Clients of this pilot scheme must have a Roscommon address.
