Late Feely point condemns Rossies to defeat

All-Ireland SFC Group 3

Kildare 1-16

Roscommon 1-15

A spectacular ‘mark’ kicked by Kevin Feely out on the sideline gave Kildare a sensational victory in a thrilling All-Ireland round robin series game at O’Connor Park in Tullamore this afternoon.

Roscommon were strangely lethargic at the start of the game and were 1-4 to 0-2 down after 16 minutes with Alex Beirne scoring the Lilywhites’ goal in the 15th minute. But black cards for Kildare duo Alex Beirne and Ryan Houlihan in the 16th and 20th minutes allowed Roscommon to get back into the match and an Enda Smith goal in the 28th minute helped Roscommon into a 1-6 t0 1-4 half-time lead.

The second half was a rip-roaring affair with the teams exchanging some brilliant scores. Kildare equalised with a Ben McCormack point in the 48th minute and it was tense from there to the finish.

Cian McKeon’s mark in the 64th minute put Roscommon ahead but a Kevin Feely mark and a Ben McCormack point saw Kildare ahead in injury-time.

Enda Smith kicked what looked like the equaliser in the 72nd minute but there was still time for Daniel Flynn to set up Feely for that last-gasp winner.

Roscommon finished third in their group and face a difficult away trip to a second placed team next weekend.
