Lady luck shines on Rossies!

Lidl LGFA NFL Division 3A:
Louth 2-4 Roscommon 2-5

Roscommon Ladies football manager Ollie Lennon was delighted with the resilience shown by his team as they survived a late Louth rally to win by a point at Fr. McEvoy Park in Cooley last Sunday afternoon.

Roscommon bounced back from their narrow defeat to Down the week before, with Aisling Hanly’s fortuitous goal from a free just after the second-half water break proving decisive.

“It was another very tight game but thankfully we came out on the right side of the result this time around,” Lennon told People Sport this week.

“It means that we have all to play for when we face Sligo in the final group game. I was very happy with how the girls ground out the result and training is going well.

“We have no new injuries after the Louth match which is also very positive. Our aim was to be in with a chance when we played Sligo and that’s the way it has turned out and we are looking forward to that match now,” he said.

Hanly’s late deflected free found the net to give the visitors a 2-4 to 1-2 lead in the closing stages after a Jenny Higgins first-half free had trickled to the net to give Roscommon the upper hand early on. Laura Fleming was once again to the fore and she finished the match with four points to her name.

Louth never gave up throughout, however, and stormed back in the closing stages with a late Ciara Woods goal setting up a nervy finish for Lennon’s charges.

The visitors held on to win by the narrowest of margins and will be buoyed by this result as they prepare to face Sligo in Kiltoom on Saturday week.
