Six Roscommon players were named on the Lidl Ladies Division Three team of the year in what was a huge boost for the group ahead of the All-Ireland series which begins in two weeks’ time.
Helena Cummins, Sinead Kenny, Niamh Feeney, Laura Fleming, Jenny Higgins, and Aisling Hanly were the six players chosen.
Meanwhile, Roscommon defeated Sligo by 4-17 to 3-3 in the Connacht championship at Dr. Hyde Park last Sunday, recovering from their opening day defeat to Leitrim.
Clare are also in the Connacht championship this year and Ollie Lennon’s charges will meet the Banner girls this Saturday in Woodmount.
The Roscommon manager is hopeful for a win over Clare which will qualify the Rossies for yet another final following their league success earlier in the year.
“We were happy with our display on Sunday after what happened against Leitrim the previous week. To score 4-17 was very satisfying and we are looking forward to the match against Clare now,” he said.
“Clare are a very good side. They were relegated from Division Two but they have some very good players so it should be a good match. The Connacht championship is good preparation for the All-Ireland series when it starts so we would like to get into the final,” he concluded.
Groups for the All-Ireland series are chosen on the basis of how each team does in the provincial championships so there is an incentive for Roscommon to do well. Ollie Lennon says that there are no injuries in the squad ahead of the meeting with Clare so a home a win is a reasonable expectation this Saturday.
