Ladies on course for last four spot

Lidl Ladies National Football League Division Three: Roscommon 3-10 Leitrim 3-6

Roscommon’s good run in the ladies national league continued at Ballinamore last Saturday when they had a deserved four point win against the home side. Michael Finneran’s team now look set for a semi-final place with games coming up against Wexford and Limerick.

Roscommon grabbed three vital goals in the opening half and then withstood a Leitrim onslaught in the second half to emerge victorious.

In the first minute, Joanne Cregg scored Roscommon’s first goal and when Natalie McHugh converted a penalty in the 12th minute Roscommon led by 2-2 to no score.

Leitrim’s first score was a goal from Ailbhe Clancy in the 15th minute but Rachel’s Fitzmaurice’s goal in the 23rd minute restored Roscommon’s advantage and at half-time the visitors led by 3-3 to 1-3.

The third quarter saw Roscommon outscore the home side by 0-4 to 0-2 but a Laura O’Dowd goal saw Leitrim come to within four points with 12 minutes left and then almost immediately O’Dowd scored a second goal to reduce the margin to one.

But Roscommon steadied the ship and points from Laura Fleming (2) and Natalie McHugh were decisive. Roscommon play Limerick this coming weekend.
