Meath too strong for Rossies!
All-Ireland Minor B Semi-Final: Meath 4-11 Roscommon 2-7
There was no luck for Roscommon’s minor ladies at Kinnegad last Saturday. Meath dominated possession all through but only made that show on the scoreboard in the second half against a Roscommon side who never gave up.
Roscommon competed well in the opening half and were rewarded when Sinead Glennon scored an opportunist’s goal in the 15th minute. But Meath were back in front when Lauren Grier converted a penalty a minute later. Roscommon were back in the game by half-time when Sinead Glennon scored a second goal and there were only two points between the teams at the break: Meath 1-7 Roscommon 2-2.
However, the Royals were much sharper on the resumption. Sarah Lynch rattled home an early goal and that set them on their way. A few minutes later Lauren Grier scored Meath’s third goal and Roscommon’s chances were fading. Sub Paula Doran added another goal for Meath late in the game.
Roscommon finished defiantly with points from Louise Brady (2) and Sarah Scally but Meath ran out the comfortable winners. Best for Roscommon were Louise Brady, Shannon Dowd, Sinead Glennon and Sarah Scally.
Roscommon: M Kelly; M Tiernan, S Dowd, S Fleming; A McLoughlin, R Wynne, A Curley; L Brady (0-3), N Shanagher (0-1); C Corcoran (0-2), S Farrell, M McHugh; L Curran, S Scally (0-1), S Glennon (2-0). Subs: A Hanmore for Curran, A Malone for Corcoran, S Caulfield for Glennon, S Hoare for McLoughlin.
Cruel exit for youngsters!
All-Ireland U-16 B Semi-Final: Kildare 3-8 Roscommon 1-12
Roscommon were unlucky to have lost out in this thrilling All-Ireland semi-final on Wednesday last. Kildare were the better side in the opening half and aided by a goal from Orlaith Sullivan, they led by 1-6 to 0-4 at half-time.
Roscommon played much better in the second half and were rewarded when the outstanding Kayleigh Shine converted a penalty in the 43rd minute. A string of excellent points saw Roscommon surge into the lead (by five points) with only six minutes to go. But Kildare were not finished and they scored a second goal from the penalty spot through Orlaith Sullivan.
There was then incredible drama in the 7 minutes of injury-time. Sasha Lavin saved a Sullivan penalty but it rebounded straight back to Sullivan and she scored at the second attempt to put her side a point ahead. A pointed free shortly after was the final score. It was a cruel way to lose for Roscommon who had played so well.
Roscommon: S Lavin; E Kildea, S Wynne, A Walsh; K McPhillips, J Brennan, S McVeigh; K Nolan, E Irwin; K Shine (1-8), K Colgan, M Kelly; L Shanagher, N Munelly (0-2), K Earle (0-2). Subs: S Kilroe for Colgan, C Galvin for Phillips, M Keogh for Nolan.
