Connacht Junior Football Championship Sligo              1-16 Roscommon  1-14 Defending champions Roscommon fell at the first hurdle in the Connacht Junior Football Championship at The Abbey Park in Boyle on Friday night last.   It was a very entertaining game for the small crowd who attended and Roscommon were unlucky to lose out in the end.   The sides were level at 1-7 apiece at half-time with Ross Nolan getting Roscommon’s goal after three minutes while Sligo’s goal came from John Scanlon in the 20th minute. Sligo pulled three points clear entering the final quarter and although Roscommon attacked constantly during the final five minutes in search of a winning goal it was not to be. Roscommon: C. Nicholson; S. Sharkey, M. Kilillea, D. Donlon; D. Flynn, N. Moran, N. Shine; J. McDermott, M. Connaughton (0-2); J. Callery (0-1), S. Purcell, M. Duignan (0-1); R. Martin (0-3), R. Nolan (1-4), J Dunning (0-1). Subs: S. Gilleran for Sharkey; A. Dooney (0-1) for Martin; J. Collins for Gilleran; P. Freeman (0-1) for McDermott. Footnote: There was anger at the gates at the Abbey Park when supporters were charged €10. The People have been contacted by a number of fans who felt that the charge was excessive for a junior championship match. We have also been contacted by a number of GAA supporters who complained that the match was very poorly advertised and many people claim that they didn’t know the game was on at all.
