A new drive to create jobs in Ballaghaderreen was kick-started at a public meeting in the town last night (Wednesday). A steering committee that was elected at the meeting in Durkin’s Hotel to examine the written submissions of local community groups in respect of the economic and social development of the town will report to a public meeting that will be held in the town in mid-April. It is envisaged that a Ballaghaderreen Development Task Force that will be established at the mid-April meeting will coordinate the development of the town in the coming years on the social partnership model that has been the cornerstone of Irish government since the late 1980s. The development of a swimming pool, a crèche, and social and tourism infrastructure were discussed at the meeting, which was chaired by Mayor John Kelly. See page 5.
