Figures released recently show that the number of unemployed people in the Roscommon area of the country has increased by 31.5 percent in the past year. The number of people on the live register in Co. Roscommon rose by 242 in the past year, a rise of 18 percent. Figures released this week show a total of 1,584 people on the live register in the county in January 2008, compared to 1,342 in January 2007. The figures were also up on the December figures of 1,512. Castlerea remains the area of highest unemployment in the county, with 705 people on the live register in January 2008. This represents a substantial increase on the January 2007 figure of 610, a rise of over 15 percent. In the Boyle area there were 412 people on the register, compared to 377 (+9.2%) this time last year, while in Roscommon there were 467 people on the register, a substantial increase from last year’s figure of 355 (31.5%). Of the county’s total figure of 1,584, just 317 of those on the register are under 25 years of age.
