Well-known auctioneer and hurler Ivan Connaughton is putting his name forward for position of County Board Hurling secretary, following news that the legendary Johnny Haughey won’t be seeking re-election. Ivan told the People this week that he has received a lot of support from various clubs since making his interest known. Paying tribute to Johnny Haughey for his excellent work over an amazing 55 years as secretary, Ivan said that Mr. Haughey could have gone further in the GAA had he so wished. ‘I’d like a chance to fill the role,’ said the Athleague hurler, adding ‘but if I get it, I won’t be staying 55 years!’
