Is there a venue for ploughing in Castlerea or Strokestown?

Roscommon County Ploughing AGM

The AGM of Roscommon County Ploughing took place in Hannon’s Hotel on Wednesday, 7th of December. There was a large attendance present on the night.

Officers elected for the coming year are as follows –President: Christy Neilan; Vice President: Gerry Browne; Chairman: Tim Fox; Vice Chairman: Con McGarry; Secretary: John O’Leary; Vice Secretary:  Noelle Rogerson; Treasurer: Joe Fitzmaurice; Vice Treasurer: Mary Candler; PRO: Noel Moran; NPA Representative: Padraig Nolan; Health & Safety: Joe Kelly; Chief Steward: Des Hunt.

Main topic discussed on the night was how to encourage more youth to get involved in ploughing. Roscommon, no more than any other county, are finding it difficult to attract the younger generation into the art of ploughing.

Also discussed on the night was the need for more attractive prize money to be offered by the NPA to novice ploughing classes.

A venue for the 2017 ploughing was also discussed. There are two areas in the county where the ploughing has not been held for some years, namely Castlerea and Strokestown.

If anyone in those areas thinks they have a suitable site, please contact any member of the committee.

It is hoped to run a few fundraising events in the New Year.

As with any organisation, it takes finance to keep the show going. Votes of sympathy were also passed on the night.

The Chairman concluded the meeting by wishing everyone a happy and safe Christmas and looked forward to seeing all in 2017.
